Whimbrel needs the microphone to hear what you say, and it uses it only while you dictate.
While it listens, it runs as a foreground service, as Android requires. On Android 12 and later, the status bar shows the microphone indicator whenever it does.
It asks for nothing else: not your location, contacts, camera, photos, files or call history.
